If you have the desire to work in real estate, rest assured that you have chosen a path that many consider a solid choice for potential growth. As a real estate agent, you will have the ability to make a decent living, meet a variety of people, and even be your own boss.

Real estate agents are a mixed breed. They come with various degrees or none at all. They are full time or part time workers and some are even retirees. What attracts people to this profession and keeps them there?

There are many advantages to a career as a real estate agent. Your work hours are flexible and you can even work part-time. Some real estate agents hold full time jobs and sell properties on the side. Being able to set your own hours can be a dream come true. Can you imagine working when you want? Also, there is possibility for top income. Some realtors make it into the million-dollar club!

Truth of the matter is that rarely do part-time real estate agents make a high income. The reason is, if you’re in the office only a few hours, how will you get the calls from sellers to handle their property, or the call from buyers looking for a dream house? What you get out of being a real estate agent will be directly affected by what you put into it. But if the hours, schedule and enthusiasm of being able to help people are of primary importance to you, you can still make money even working part-time.

In reality, most successful real estate agents, work long hours, which consist of nighttime and weekend work. These are the hours most clients are available. Also, since income is a commission based on closed transactions, the more properties you list, the more properties you can sell. Being in the office at your desk is key for success here.

A real estate agent must be a people person. You should be able to understand people and be able to meet their desires and needs. You should have a good knowledge of the different neighborhoods in your area, as well as, the school districts. Finally, you should be a good negotiator. In return, you will get to see some exquisite houses, make some new friends, meet many interesting people and make some good money.

To become a real estate agent you only need a high school diploma and good communications skills. Although some real estate agents may have college degrees, most learning will occur on the job. The one requirement that every state has is licensure. To obtain a real estate license you must pass an exam. There are numerous courses offered to help you gain the knowledge to ace this. On passing, you can then join the National Association of Realtors and start you new career.

A real estate agent is not all about being a seller. It is about understanding people and wanting to help them. Buying a house will be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, transaction a person will make in a lifetime. You get to help them find this, prepare for it and purchase it. This takes great eagerness, perceptiveness, patience and work. In the end, the reward will be your client’s happiness and your satisfaction of a job well done.
